As you might have noticed, my name is Gergely Erdélyi. I was born in Hungary in 1978. I spent my childhood in a small village called Hajmáskér, village of 2100 people.

At fourteen I went to high school forty kilometers away from home and spent most of my time in the dorm with a pack of other geeks.

The next stop University of Veszprém, starting from 1997. Three years of suffering ended when I figured I had enough and moved to Finland in mid-2000. I have lived there ever since.

I got hooked on computers quite young. I wrote my first BASIC programs at the age of 10 and then, the rest is history… ;)

Well, not so fast. The first computer I ever programmed was a Videoton TV Computer, a Z80-based home computer manufactured in Hungary. The box had tolerable BASIC, pretty good graphic and mediocre sound capabilities.

In eighty-something I got my first own computer for Christmas. I treasured my own Commodore 16 which was great. I quickly realized though that BASIC is not going to stretch quite far enough so I grabbed a book on C-16 assembly and started crunching on that. It was great fun even though in retrospect a real assembler, instead of the primitive built-in monitor of C-16, would have been handy. The same goes for a floppy drive, instead of the casette recorder I had.

1992 and secondary school introduced me to Intel PCs. First stop: Pascal. Did not get get too zelaous about Pascal programming for various reasons. Because of that I found myself coding in assembly, again. Have to admit that Intel x86 assembly was not much fun until I grapsed the idea behind segmentation and related horrors.

I can not remember whatever got me to try C. C was quite an experience but K & R got me started reasonably quickly. This is around 1993 we are talking about.

Starting from 2000, I work for F-Secure Corporation, at the headquarters in Helsinki. In 2001 I joined F-Secure Research. Nowadays I work there as a Senior Antivirus Researcher. At work I spend my time with development of research tools and occasional malware analysis.
